Never mind that was not my problem. I kept getting error messages. Turns out that when downloading the new omeka themes there are more folders then need. I had to open two levels of folders before getting to the theme part.

Interesting idea though! The growth in mobile versions of websites, when will it start? And what will trigger it if the widespread smart phone that exists now hasn't as yet?

Nice site btw!

Sure. You'd just add it the same way you'd add any other image. There isn't an item type for "map," but you can indicate that it's a map in the metadata (for instance, in the subject headings, description, and/or tags).

Well, you don't need to use the OCR software to save your jpgs as pdfs -- the OCR is really for printouts (like photocopies) that you can feed in. But they should be able to help you convert the jpgs to pdfs at the Digital Studio. Still, I'd recommend keeping them in jpg form. You might want to use Photoshop or a similar program to change them from color or grayscale images to 8-bit black and white (only black, only white, no gray) images -- that will definitely make them smaller and might also make them more readable.

It's definitely true that search engine optimization -- which can refer to simple things like giving your site a good title and a good description -- is in itself a good and possibly sufficient "marketing" strategy. Particularly, as you say, for projects like yours, but in some cases also for archives and museums.

I think Google Maps would be a good way to show a location on a map on your site, probably on a front page or a Simple Page -- Go to http://maps.google.com, search for the location you want to map, then click "Link" on the upper right. You'll get an option to "Paste HTML to embed in website." Also, the Omeka plugin called "Contribution" is designed to let you collect materials from people who visit the site.

Hey guys,

I think Amanda is going to talk about this tonight. But after talking to her, I was able to do this pretty easily. You have to upload an html page (file name like index.html) from your local site to your remote site using you FTP ( i created the index.html with my computer's text editor using some code copied and pasted from my main omeka page and some stuff I wrote) it is at brigidharmon.com now. ( it looks weird with the color, i have to fix that)

That's a really good comparison to bring up, Kait. A lot of the readings are about how to improve your search rankings, yes, and some people are all TOO good at that with bad content. I suppose I'd say that that's why I want to teach you guys a little bit about it, so that you can provide highly ranked content to compete with crud like that. If it interests you, you might go back and read more of that book *Search Engine Society* that we read part of earlier in the semester -- Halavais is very good on topics like this.

How to embed in Omeka, right? If you want to catalog one of those as an item, the best way to do it is to catalog it as a "Hyperlink," which granted doesn't "embed" it. There's probably a way to embed it, but I haven't thought about it. Any field that takes HTML will take the embed code for either one, like so:<br /><br /> <object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZnehCBoYLbc&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZnehCBoYLbc&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object><br /><br />

Nicole,

I was able to embed a youtube video in the omeka archive. I selected hyperlink for the item type and pasted the embed link in that field. This did work to display the video.

I could not get it to display for the exhibtion however.

Actually I'd be interested to hear about the projects that were shut down -- hope you say more about that.

To some extent, Omeka is optimized for preservation -- note especially that you can get data out of it with OAI if you install the plugin for that purpose.

The most important thing is to be 1) consistent, and 2) transparent. In other words, do the same thing every time, and explain somewhere (perhaps on a separate page) what you've decided to do.

Today's class will address that latter question! And that's a very important point about physical media. Also, excess of digital info might simply mean that saving it becomes less important.

I'd think that the interviews would be appropriate -- why wouldn't they? I suppose if they didn't follow oral history interviewing standards? They're certainly unique material, so access to them might be important.

Yes, there is a way to allow certain people access: you create them a user account with "Researcher" status. See http://omeka.org/codex/User_Roles

I don't know if this would help, but when I transcribed letters at my last job we had a lot of misspellings, and we would just put the correct spelling in brackets afterward if we thought it was a word the user wouldn't understand or was very localized (i.e. "Battle of Alestee [Olustee]"). Also, if the letters were damaged we'd put [missing text] or something similar to that.

I will be creating a website to support the research I have been doing on the Harlem chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). I have been doing oral history interviews with ex-members and searching for documentation regarding their stories.

This research is a big part of my M.A. thesis and my future PhD work.

I have already started building the site – http://www.harlemcore.com

For now, it will have a general history of the organization and many of the documents (and photos) that I have been able to find over the last year and a half.

Below is the link to my online archive. I’m having some trouble changing my theme so it is currently still in the default theme. My goal is to digitize as much of the collection of personal papers of Mary Ann Dickinson Smith as is possible given the time. Mary, the wife of Senator Truman Smith of Connecticut, was a copious letter writer. In addition to writing daily, she saved what seems like most, if not all of her correspondence. Remarkably, much of the correspondence she wrote herself, especially those letters sent to her husband and her sons, was also saved and is included in the collection as well. Mary’s letters illustrate the intimacies of daily life in the mid 19th century, while allowing a contemporary reader a window into a world long since gone.

What I'd suggest you do is either scan or take a screenshot of the first page of the PDF and upload that as the first image of the item so that you can use it in an exhibit if need be. Here are links on how to take screenshots in Windows http://www.wikihow.com/Take-a-Screenshot-in-Microsoft-Windows and in Mac http://guides.macrumors.com/Taking_Screenshots_in_Mac_OS_X

I'm actually really glad you posted that, Meredith -- I've been realizing that I need to include more *debate* in the course readings, and this is the kind of thing that can spark that. We haven't actually been doing any reading about whether technology is a good teaching tool (in the traditional sense of teaching, i.e., using it in a classroom), but of course we're practicing that all the time, and we are working on the assumption that building a web site is a good way to do public education.

I'm flawed as a thinker in some ways because I can always see multiple sides to every issue. There's no doubt in my mind that technology is expensive and annoying, but there's also no doubt in my mind that it's awesome. I make decisions on a case-bycase basis: is this technology too annoying and expensive without being sufficiently awesome? If so, I always say don't bother. Google Wave, for instance, is not expensive, but it is annoying and insufficiently awesome, so I haven't been bothering with it.

Also, what this particular article doesn't address is whether universities are taking sufficient advantage of free and low-cost technologies. There are lots of ways to spend less on technology that universities often don't consider.

www.themedleyarchives.com/Project

This site is intended to collect variations of soldier correspondence (or communications) starting as early as the Revolutionary War. So far I have a few letters from a couple of different wars in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, but I would like to add letters from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars if possible. I am also planning to include a number of soldier blogs from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, as I would like this to be a main focus. I haven't quite figured out how I can/want to do this though. Eventually I plan to use the site to examine the changes made by technology to soldiers' communications and how this is epitomized with the current use of blogs by soldiers over seas.

http://www.harlemcore.com http://www.harlemcore.com/omeka

This is a site dedicated to the history of the Harlem chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality, also known as Harlem CORE. During the civil rights movement, this was one of the most prominent chapters of CORE who, along with the NAACP, SNCC and Dr. King's group, the SCLC, were considered to be one of the most important civil rights organizations at the time. This chapter is especially significant as it played a large role in the organization shifting to Black nationalism during the Black Power movement.
The site will not only contain items as part of it's digital archive, but will also feature
sections of a research paper done on the history of Harlem CORE while I was still here at NYU.

I teach, and I agree with jmonjeau, this guy has it wrong. For almost every technology you need in education, there is a free option. Our job in education is to educate, not to provide jobs.

Now, tech is not the solution to every problem in education, and I know my students favour a good mix of tech and old fashioned face to face interaction. But that can be done, and done well, and done very cheaply. Used properly, technology can enableus to do more with less, and save jobs.

This article seems like sour grapes to me.

Janitors' families are going hungry because Universities are offering e-journals and e-books to students, or are offering courses on video-game design?

According to the author, the fact that Twitter exists (regardless of the fact that it is a FREE service) seems to be causing the downfall of the entire University system!

If you don't know whether you have an FTP program, then you almost certainly don't. You can download the Filezilla program mentioned in the instructions if you have Mac OS X 10.5 (click on the apple icon in the upper right to fnid out your OS version). If you have an earlier version (such as 10.4 or 10.3), then you can download and install a program such as <a href="http://download.cnet.com/Secure-FTP/3000-2160_4-26295.html?tag=mncol" rel="nofollow">SecureFTP</a>.

It's actually the case that Macs have FTP capabilities built right in to the operating system, so technically you don't even need a separate stand-alone program, but I don't want to confuse things by teaching the Mac users something different than I teach everyone else.

NYU won't allow you to install the Omeka software on its servers, so that's one big disadvantage. But apart from that, you're right -- there's no real advantage to using one server instead of another, and yes, you'll be able to access your work from anywhere.

Well, there's one additional exception: servers, like other computers, have different configurations and operating systems. For instance, some computers run the operating system Windows XP, some run Windows Vista, some are Macs and run OS X. Software that works with one operating system might or might not work with another, so you have to make sure that the computer and the software are compatible.

Yes, you'll have some opportunity to override Omeka's defaults -- that's one of the great benefits of open source software. (It can't be done, for instance, with Blackboard.) The extent to which you do so will be dependent on how comfortable you are with figuring out how to make those changes and on how much you want them. :)

"Does Omeka give us this choice," you ask? Yes and no; Omeka allows you to pick pre-existing "themes," and individual themes are coded differently. The "minimalist" theme that comes with Omeka sets the body of the web page to be 75%, for instance. Neither is recommended, exactly: there are pros and cons to both, good examples and bad examples of both. And one of the chief difficulties of web design, as Cohen and Rosenzweig point out, is that you *can't*, ultimately, maintain a completely consistent appearance regardless of browser.

All great points you guys are making -- note that the Cohen and Rosenzweig chapter on design specifically takes issue with Krug, a bit, for these very reasons!

Ah, yes -- you should have clicked "Save File," not "Open With." Firefox is now confused, because you've told it to "Open .zip files with Firefox," and Firefox can't open .zip files.

You should go into your Firefox preferences with Tools --> Options, then click on the "Applications" tab, then scroll down till you find the .zip file type (it might be labeled WinRAR Zip Archive) and choose "Save File." That way, next time you try to download a .zip file, it will ask you where you want to save it. Save the .zip file to your hard drive and double-click on it to uncompress it. If you have further problems, we'll address those.

I can't seem to download Omeka. When I clicked on the download button and was asked what I wanted to open the file with, I browsed around and set it to Firefox (I think) and then foolishly clicked the "always open with this" box. And now Firefox keeps opening all these empty tabs, hundreds of them, which appear to not do anything. Omeka shows up in my Firefox downloads, but I can't open it. And it doesn't show up in my regular Downloads folder. I tried googling a solution, but most of the troubleshooting I found was for a program which had already been download.

We're going to actually learn some HTML in class tomorrow! I'm definitely not going to teach JavaScript; all you really need to know is that it's a type of code that helps make websites fancier with things like animations. If you've ever moved your mouse over an image or link and had a little hover screen pop up, that's <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/J/JavaScript.html" rel="nofollow">JavaScript.</a>

Note that the instructions say that you do *not* have to install Omeka; we will install it in on the server during class. All you have to do is download the .zip file and unzip it. You'll wind up with a folder called "omeka-1.1". Just leave it there where you can find it.

For Stacey: Yes, publishing is related to syncing. When you sync your library to zotero.org, you get a web page there with your sources and notes on it. "Syncing" is short for "synchronizing," so when you synchronize what's on your hard drive to zotero.org, what's on your hard drive appears on zotero.org.

For Paula: here are the <a href="http://www.zotero.org/support/creating_bibliographies" rel="nofollow">instructions on how to make a print bibliography</a> with Zotero.

I'm also confused on how we are to post our bibliography online through Zotero.org. Is this related to syncing your library?

Thanks!

Lessig, Rosenzweig/Cohen and Jensen articles present a continuum of activism regarding the legal regulation of the digital "cultural commons" with Lessig the most radical and, perhaps, Jensen the most measured. All three see the need for digital copyright/patent reform and that digital users must be participants in this reform (or revolutionary) movement. Rosenzweig and Cohen suggest that the individual push the limits of the copyright laws when publishing online as a way to create new interpretations of regulatory laws.

Lessig's arguments that regulation thwart creativity and innovation cannot be denied and the work of EFF has been extremely important to the 'liberation' of the digital sphere. My question is how do we integrate the ideas of Lessig into our day to day digital encounters (creations)?

It's show and tell isn't it? But if you can avoid the careerism and cant it's an opportunity to listen and engage. As regards affecting a change:
collections are central to academic culture, custodians less so. The latter have a niche in the academy as practitioners and experts so long as they continue to operate under the twin principals of preservation and access and effectively engineer solutions to meet this challenge.

One little caveat -- on Friday I actually will not be available from 12-2, since we are having a brown bag; and from 2-3, since I have another meeting. I am fine with staying after 5 on Friday, though, if anyone cannot make it during the day. My office is in Room 503.

I'd say yes. People object to this settlement because they want to make sure that Google's "library" of online books isn't the only source for certain books. That would give Google way too much power in determining what people can read online.

I thought this was an interesting reaction to the googlebooks settlement issue....

http://humanrights.foreignpolicyblogs.com/2009/09/20/is-there-a-right-to-knowledge/

is access to books through google books a human rights issue?

From the end of the article article:

"It is also interesting that as this debate over Google Books goes on in the US, other courts in the world seem to be going the opposite direction than the Department of Justice. For example France’s highest court found in June that a law creating an internet police agency to fight against copyright piracy violated people’s basic human rights, which included the right to the internet. Although the decision and the law in question mainly concerned music piracy, the general issue is not that far off from the debate around Google Books.

In other words, there may be more than antitrust issues at stake in the Google Books settlement saga. Given the size and stature of Google, the ultimate outcome of this debate may determine more than the future of internet copyright law; it may also determine what information and knowledge the rest of us have a fundamental right to."

Indeed. Exciting developments. We have a whole week coming up on the subject of copyright later, but this particular case is so complicated it could be the subject of a whole semester. Taught by someone other than me!

Drag about losing your data. It is true that version 2 of Zotero (the "beta" version) does copy things to zotero.org, but that isn't really a backup. Oh well, all in the name of learning . . . you might come to prefer EndNote. :)

It's interesting: most people would object strongly to the notion that today's browser is "read-only" -- the whole notion of "Web 2.0" is that people contribute to the web. Even something as simple as YouTube or Flickr is a new use for the web, and of course there are blog comments and Amazon reviews and so on -- people contribute in lots of ways, though you're absolutely right that most people choose not to. This great article by Nina Simon talks about that -- in museums, most people don't really want to create their own media: http://museumtwo.blogspot.com/2009/03/self-expression-is-over-rated-better.html

We're going to discuss folks's research projects at length next time; I'll think hard about your problem of having not enough materials. The project is mostly an archiving project, so it involves locating primary source materials but not necessarily "processing" them intellectually, if you know what I mean -- it's almost just a bibliography of primary materials.

I replied about the export issue on the other post. As to your interesting question, "Will there be a day when you no longer have to visit an archive in person, but can complete research through online archives?" I'd venture to say no. :) The number of records & personal papers vastly exceeds (for instance) the number of published books; I don't think they'll ever be completely digitized. However, most personal papers & records will, in the future, be "born digital," so the further into the future we get, the more digital archives there will be.

Someone pointed me today to these two studies showing that museum visitors are not at all likely to prefer the digital object over the actual object: see http://is.gd/3lBiG and http://is.gd/3lBo6 In one study, 69% of people said that the availability of the online object isn't at all important in their decision to visit; in the other study, one of the key findings was that visits to museum web sites and to museums are strongly correlated: "The more one visits museum web spaces, the more likely one is to visit museums in person."

Yes, indeed. The best format to export in is RIS; in Endnote this entails going to File --> Export and choosing "RIS," then saving that as a file. You'd then go into (e.g.) Zotero and choose File --> Import and select the file you saved.

One problem I am having is exporting the references I found through Endnote and exporting them to all the other programs we've asked to open accounts for. That being said, I'm sure it is just a matter of experimenting with the program a bit more.

In thinking about "neutral" authorship, I think it's important to consider who contributes to Wikipedia. This <a href="link url" rel="nofollow">http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/08/31/only-13-of-wikipedia-contributors-are-women-study-says/</a> post on the Wall Street Journal reveals that only 13% of contributers are women, while 31% of all readers are women.
