I do not have a tech question this week instead I have food for thought about this week readings. My food for thought on the readings is that technology is taking over our lives. I would not be surprised if the next generation will grow up without ever having to touch a pen or paper. My feeling is that paper will be come precious as stone tablets are today, rare and beautiful piece of history. The art of writing is disappearing. Penmanship is no longer taught at school, but typing is more and more necessary and replacing writing. I am not so worried about lost of digital history, because there are so many people invested and working on preserving digital history that we will figure it out. I am more worried about lost of how we write and communicate though paper and pen. I having a feeling that in 100 years there will no longer be pen and paper.

I think that Krug was right when he said that people don’t read everything on a website. People are only looking for the information that is important to him or her. People do not read the whole website like a book. People interact with the website more like an encyclopedia. Flipping to passages that he or she want to read and hardly looking a the rest (if at all) to the rest of the site. I can’t think of a website that I have gone to and had read every single word or used every link. For that matter I come to expect that websites should be easy to use. If a website is not easy to use normally I do not go back unless I have to. I get very impatient with website, if I cannot find what I am looking for I give up easily compared to the real world. In the real world I have the patience and deal with not finding what I am looking for. I feel that I can ask people for help and get quick answers. I find that dealing with computers answers are hard to come by or take time compare to the real world. I may be the only one to find this true.

I agree with Thomas in that people needs know programing. Children today are growing up with computer program. In-order to keep up with the younger generation professionals need to know programing. That being said I think that professionals today have a great opportunity for setting standards and prescient for the future of digital archives. I think that all archives need to be on the web and that collections should be on-line or at the very least have the finding aids on-line. I think how finding aids and collections that are on-line today are not efficient for researchers. The Smithsonian is the best at having their collection on-line, but I think that we as a profession can do better. In order for archivist to do better we first need to know programing to get computers to do what we want it to do. I think that on-line archives should be able to do date, to and from, person, department, collection, and subject searches and bring up related material. Feel free to disagree.

I have a saying “everything that everything has been said; has been said or thought of by someone else.” Very few things out there in the world are actually original thought. I believe that we are influenced into thinking things by what we read and other people. I believe in that there should be very little copyright on writings and works. I believe that we build upon the works of the past. That is how we advance as a society. I don’t however agree with taking money from a person and credit should be given to people who do the work. I think that all research should open to students and other researchers, but how do you make money, if that is true?

I fulling believe that copyright should not go beyond a persons death. Once, a person is dead all copyright should stop. The reason I say this is because the person heirs did not write or come up with the idea. The person’s job was what ever was copyright and once person’s dead the job stops. Example, my father dies I don’t get money from his company for the next 70 years. Than why should an author?

I think collaboration is great way of coming up with new ideas and has push development in all fields. I have found with collaboration simple ideas or the original ideas sometimes get blow into something bigger or different from where they start. This may not be a bad thing because most projects start out as one thing and change over the course of development. It is just that sometimes project ends up controlling the development and not the creator. The creator loses control of the project which could mean that the project ends not serving or solving the original problem. I think a person needs to think about collaboration before embarking on collaboration. I am a fan of collaboration because on the chance of new developments, but it has it’s down falls.

In my readings this week, especially with Glut, I got to thinking about language and classification. Personally, I am finding that the language of a professional discipline are crossing into other disciplines. It seems to me that language is becoming more universal with more technology and information. Yet, how we classify things in the library/archival world is very subject and professional orientated based language. Yet, the professions themselves are more interdependent on other professions. Searches many of the time are not done by professionals in the field, but outsiders of the field. I think there needs to be more universal classification system and something that keep up with the change language that is use.

What stands out for me in Friedman is the idea that computer play important role hopes and fears for our future. We hope that computers will lead the way to utopian at the same time there is fear of computers taking over our lives. Yes computer make life easier, but sometimes it would be better without out them. I couldn’t imagine writing a paper without a computer, but I sometimes feel that it is easier to do paperwork by hand than by the computer. I find myself in a love/hate relationship with the computer.

I was just reflecting on the discussion we were having in class about who has the authority in the case of Wikipedia. After thinking about the question I came to realize the Wikipedia is a collective mind. Wikipedia is the thoughts of thousands of individuals that is ever changing. Public opinion of the moment rein supreme in Wikipedia, which has its good points and bad points. People can see what the ideas of other’s about a concept of a topic in todays context. Todays context is ever changing with the massive over load of information, a person can look on the internet gather information about any topic and become quote authority on a subject. The problem comes with Wikipedia when general public don’t know a lot about a topic or has a strong opinion. It takes only one person with misinformation to post something and if it sounds plausible can left on the site. It is harder to find who is writing what on Wikipedia compare to another source like a book. A person needs to be aware that Wikipedia has its authority based on public opinion and not on a group or individuals opinion. Public opinion I find to be easy to sway.
