In preparation for class this Wednesday, please download the following:
1) The FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program Filezilla, available at http://filezilla-project.org/ (download the Client version, not the Server version) or from http://download.cnet.com/FileZilla/3000-2160_4-10308966.html?tag=mncol This program can be installed on either Windows or Mac OS X. Please also install this program after you download it; here’s a quick guide to downloading and installing free software that I wrote for you; go through it carefully if you’re at all unclear on the process.
2) The Omeka 1.1 software package, available at http://omeka.org. We will install this software on your servers during class. Be sure to unzip the .zip file, and be sure you know where the resulting folder (which will be titled “omeka-1.1″) is located. (Update: All you need to do is to download the Omeka files. Do not try to install Omeka on your laptop by double-clicking on anything. We will install Omeka on your server space during class.)
That’s it. See you on Wednesday!
I can’t seem to download Omeka. When I clicked on the download button and was asked what I wanted to open the file with, I browsed around and set it to Firefox (I think) and then foolishly clicked the “always open with this” box. And now Firefox keeps opening all these empty tabs, hundreds of them, which appear to not do anything. Omeka shows up in my Firefox downloads, but I can’t open it. And it doesn’t show up in my regular Downloads folder. I tried googling a solution, but most of the troubleshooting I found was for a program which had already been download.
Ah, yes — you should have clicked “Save File,” not “Open With.” Firefox is now confused, because you’ve told it to “Open .zip files with Firefox,” and Firefox can’t open .zip files.
You should go into your Firefox preferences with Tools –> Options, then click on the “Applications” tab, then scroll down till you find the .zip file type (it might be labeled WinRAR Zip Archive) and choose “Save File.” That way, next time you try to download a .zip file, it will ask you where you want to save it. Save the .zip file to your hard drive and double-click on it to uncompress it. If you have further problems, we’ll address those.
